No. 04 — About
Built in the valley, not about it.
I'm Tara Lama. I run the two Pie Hole shops on the Hunter wine-country route — one in Cessnock at 138 Wollombi Road, one in Nulkaba at 127 Wine Country Drive — and I built CellarIQ.
Before the bakeries I spent seventeen-plus years as a Bakers Delight franchisee. That's the background that matters here: not a wine critic, not a consultant flying in from a city, but someone who's run shopfront businesses for a long time and now runs two of them on the wine route. Operator credentials, not opinions.
Why I built it
The Hunter is one of Australia's great wine regions, and it's under quiet structural pressure. Cellar-door foot traffic is less predictable than it was. The wine club — the members who buy again without being sold to — has become the floor that keeps a boutique winery viable. Vintages swing harder than they used to. None of that is a secret to anyone working here; it's just rarely said plainly.
Plenty of directories already list the wineries. Listing isn't the hard part. CellarIQ scores them — consistently, against a methodology you can read and argue with — and builds the directory around the searches visitors actually make: varietal, sub-region, who they're travelling with, which cellar door suits the day.
The honest "why me": being a local operator means I meet wineries on equal ground. I'm not pitching from somewhere else. I'm a few minutes up the road, and I can drive to a cellar door and check the sign before I publish the hours.
What CellarIQ is
A wine tourism intelligence platform for the Hunter Valley. Nothing more exotic than that.
For visitors, three things: a directory scored on what matters to a visit, depth on each sub-region, and practical help planning the day.
For wineries, two: a profile you control — your bio, your experiences, your visiting detail — and, over time, real intelligence about the visitors and members behind the traffic. The profile comes first; the intelligence is earned later, and only once the foundation under it is real.
How we work isn't hidden. The editorial standards, the scoring methodology, and the sources behind every claim are all public. Today the scores are illustrative — labelled as such on every page — while the scoring is still being built. I'd rather say that plainly than dress it up.
The Pie Hole connection, stated plainly
Pie Hole has wholesale relationships with some Hunter wineries. CellarIQ scores wineries independently of that — a supply relationship buys nothing on this site. Wherever a CellarIQ profile or article mentions a winery that supplies or is supplied by Pie Hole, the relationship is disclosed right there, inline. The editorial standards spell out how. There's no paid editorial favour, and there never will be.
What CellarIQ is not
Not affiliated with any winery, association, or government body. Not a paid-listing directory — a Founding Member subscription buys a richer profile and the tools behind it, never a higher score. And not anonymous: my email is at the bottom of this page, and I'm a real person you can reach.
Where this is going
Phase 1 is the work in front of you now: every Hunter Valley winery scored, the search pages that help visitors find them, the trust foundation the whole thing stands on. That's the job until it's genuinely done.
Phase 2 is for the wineries — deeper intelligence on the business side, the part that helps a cellar door keep the members and visitors it works so hard to win. It gets built only after Phase 1 is real, not alongside it. The order is deliberate.
Reach me
The fastest way to me is email: tara@cellariq.com.au. A real person, not a ticket queue — write directly. If you'd rather talk in person, I'm at one of the Pie Hole shops most days; walk in and we'll have the conversation over a coffee.
